Starting in June, Fleet Feet Sports is hosting a weekly Fun Run that will serve as an informal "training" for the Wharf to Wharf event. Stop by and pick up a FREE 6-week training plan to prepare for the biggest 6-miler in California!
Also make sure you clip the coupon from your Wharf to Wharf race day instructions booklet and take advantage of the June & July New Balance specials! You must present the coupon to receive the discount.
Training for the Wharf to Wharf race shouldn't be taken lightly. Propelling your body forward for six miles (31,680 feet) isn't easy. Your physical and mental preparedness should be equal to make for the most enjoyable experience. Make Wharf to Wharf more fun by refining your training strategy!
If you wake up on July 27th and embark upon a six mile jaunt for the first time since Wharf to Wharf 2007 you're quite likely to be sore thereafter. This MAY be normal for some of you. Believe it or not, if you properly prepare for the event you'll feel just fine for the entire six miles and have more energy afterwards to partake in the post-race festivities! So why not start prepping now?
Beginning Thursday, June 1, Fleet Feet is starting a weekly group run (A.K.A. Our "informal" Wharf to Wharf training). Though this weekly group run will continue even after the Wharf to Wharf race, the eight weeks leading up to it will focus on training for and successfully completing this amazing local event. We will meet at Fleet Feet every Thursday at 5:30 and head out for a "workout". You are encouraged to scoop up our FREE 7-WEEK TRAINING SCHEDULE which is meant to be used as a guideline to get you ready for the big day on July 27th.
If Thursdays at 5:30 doesn't work for you, no problem! Stop by the store to pick up a FREE TRAINING SCHEDULE anyhow. Fleet Feet wants you out there training even if we can't be an active part of it!
Let's face it folks, sometimes too much information is simply TOO MUCH INFORMATION! Nutrition for athletes is no exception. There are so many nutritional products out there and it's easy to become overwhelmed by the multitude of choices available to us.
Nutritional options tend to fit into three main categories: Pre-Workout, During-Workout, and Post-Workout. Usually the drinkable versions are for either electrolyte replenishment or recovery, while the edible versions serve to replace calories. The problem with nutritional choices is that what works for you won't necessarily work for the next person!
If you are still "in the dark" about nutrition, here's the scoop in a nutshell:
PRE-WORKOUT NUTRITION: These choices can be either drinkable or edible. The point is that the product effectively "fuels up" the body before the workout. Usually bars or beverages containing carbohydrates (usually 40 grams is a good choice) are a fine option for fueling purposes. Consuming these items 30-minutes before the workout is advisable since the body needs time to assimilate the ingredients. Sipping on an electrolyte replacement drink before a workout doesn't hurt for hydration purposes either!
DURING-WORKOUT NUTRITION: The idea here is to keep from dehydrating, cramping and bonking. You should alternately sip your electrolyte replacement drink AND water before you actually feel thirsty (16 ounces of liquid per hour is a good baseline amount). You should consume a gel or chewable-type caloric replacement (100-ish calories) every 45 minutes or so. You'll also want to keep close tabs on any muscle cramping issues, especially if the weather is hot. Sometimes cramping can be alleviated by upping your salt intake.
POST-WORKOUT NUTRITION: Proteins are the basic building blocks of muscles and, as such, need to be a part of your post-workout repertoire. Many brands make recovery drinks (some use dairy proteins, some use soy), but recovery nutrition is also found in bar form. Regardless, recovery products ought to be consumed within 60 minutes of completion of the workout for maximum effectiveness.
At Fleet Feet we have many items to satisfy all the nutritional needs of all athletes. Any of our knowledgeable staff will be able to assist you with your nutritional questions and requirements!
Be safe out there!
